MASSERIA DEL VESCOVO

History: From 1000-1600 this structure was the Convent of the Basiliani. From the mid 1700’s it was the hunting house of the Bishop of Taranto, Baron of Grottaglie. In the mid 1800’s it was purchased by the marquis D’Ajala Valva who turned it into a masseria (large farm). The marquis left the property to the Order of Malta who in turn sold it to a noted architect from Puglia in 1998. The Masseria del Vescovo was primarily renovated by the current owner who transformed it into a true mix between antique and modern architecture, between the philosophy of past and his current architectural thought, between biblical and modern auras while retaining the simplicity and at the same time the majesty of the place.
House: The ground floor has a large room with a fireplace whose windows open on the surrounding garden, the kitchen and 1 twin room (double upon request) with bathroom with shower.
The upper floor has an entrance which accesses a large living room. From here one accesses the four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom with shower and fireplace, their antique doors positioned in a symmetrical manner. The view from the rooms is marvellous. Beyond the property’s garden is an expanse of countryside where diverse types of planted fields, vineyards in particular, stretch away for miles and miles.
The property is surrounded by a centuries old, high dry stone wall. Adjacent is a church still in use where mass is celebrated during the holidays or for weddings. In a corner of the garden is the pool area which is completely enclosed by its own dry stone wall. Behind the pool is a small independent apartment with a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.
Personal note:  It is a truly special place, not only because of it's magical location in complete tranquillity, nearby historical and cultural point of interest as well as the sea, but mainly because one is truly able to switch off from reality, meditate, relax, enjoy the company of friends and family, and why not, cook delicious meals while tasting a good glass of Cento Castel di Salve, 100% Primitivo (Zinfandel).
