History: The main building on the property is the Palazzo Bacile, a beautiful manor house, which has been in the Bacile di Castiglione family for nearly five centuries. In the second half of the 16th century it became a fortified castle and in the early 17th century it was transformed into a residential home. The Bacile family still lives in one section and often entertains at the property, giving guests the opportunity to socialize with locals.
Location: Casotto di Caterina is located in the small village of Spongano, approximately six kilometres off the Adriatic coast.
House: Casotto di Caterina is one of the three newly restructured, small houses spread out across the spacious property of Bacile di Castiglione. The main building on the property is the Palazzo Bacile, a 16th century manor house. It has a beautiful typical Salentino garden, consisting of various ornamental trees and large expanses of citrus groves. An old tower which used to house homing pigeons overlooks the swimming pool and there are many other charming details to be discovered in this historic garden. Inside: the casotto comprises two triple rooms, each one with a double and a single bed, two modern bathrooms and a fully equipped open kitchen with dining area. The casotto opens onto a terrace (with table, chairs and barbecue) which is covered with greenery, providing privacy from the pool area and a lovely niche for relaxing and dining outside.
Personal note: The owners have ensured all comforts and the house is ideal to rent as an individual unit. Another very suitable option is to rent it with a larger group of people, taking the other one or two accommodations (see Casotto di Martino and Casotto Nuovo), giving guests the ideal situation of spending time together while at the same time keeping one’s independence.
