Location:  Casotto di Martino is located in the small village of Spongano, midway between Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca, approximately six kilometres off the Adriatic coast.
House: The Casotto di Martino is one of the three, newly restructured, small houses spread out across the spacious property of Bacile di Castiglione. The main building on the property is the Palazzo Bacile, a 16th century manor house. It has a beautiful typical Salentino garden, consisting of various ornamental trees and large expanses of citrus groves. An old tower, which used to house homing pigeons, overlooks the swimming pool and there are many other charming details to be discovered here. The Casotto di Martino is located in this historic garden.
Inside: the casotto is a small studio with one twin bedroom, a bathroom and a kitchenette. The house opens onto a lovely terrace (with table and chairs) that is covered in greenery, providing the perfect area to relax and dine.
Personal note: The owners have ensured all comforts and the casotto is perfect for two people. If travelling with other friends, it is also ideal to rent it along with one or two of the other cottages (see Casotto di Caterina, and Casotto Nuovo), giving guests the ideal situation of spending time together while at the same time keeping one’s independence.
History: The main building on the property is the Palazzo Bacile, a beautiful manor house, which has been in the Bacile di Castiglione family for nearly five centuries. In the second half of the 16th century it became a fortified castle and in the early 17th century it was transformed into a residential home. The Bacile family still lives in one section and often entertains at the property, giving guests the opportunity to socialize with the locals.
