Location: The house is located just outside the small village of Depressa, midway between Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca. It is just six kilometres off the Adriatic coast.
House: Driving through the entrance gates and up the driveway one feels as though entering a rural sanctuary where modern-day problems can be forgotten. Inside this beautiful old farmhouse, the authentic stone floors from the stable area, the wood beamed ceilings give a rustic feel which is complimented by the hand painted furniture and comfortable décor. The large, open, fully equipped country kitchen has a living/dining area with three fireplaces, an ideal spot to enjoy meals made from fresh, local products. There is a large terrace allowing the house to drift into the surrounding fields if one prefers to eat in the open air, or lose oneself in the tranquility of the countryside.
Inside, the masseria has five air-conditioned bedrooms. Each has its own unique style with vaulted or wood beamed ceilings, exposed stone walls or arched doorways. Three double bedrooms are found on the ground floor, each with its own bathroom. Upstairs there are two bedrooms with views over the fields, one master bedroom and one room with two single beds. They share a bathroom on the same floor.
Personal note: This property is a lovely location being just at the edge of the village of Depressa, yet lost in the tranquillity of the countryside.
History: Masseria della Corte has been in the same family for many generations and, although renovated, great care has been taken to preserve the original structure. The farmhouse dates back to the 17th century when it was used by tenant farmers harvesting their crops of tobacco and olives. The late owner had a passion for archaeology and made many discoveries around the property, including the village well. Many objects of interest that he collected or created over the years are displayed throughout the house with handwritten descriptions giving pertinent details.
